This month is our National Independence Day. For almost 250 years this grand experiment in individual liberty and the pursuit of personal happiness has been celebrated as Our American Story. It was here, in Pennsylvania, where our Founding Fathers placed pen to parchment, pledging their lives, fortunes and sacred honor to the Dream of a better tomorrow. At that moment, they were of one accord, of one mind and passion moving with unabatable determination towards the goal of a more perfect union.
In so many ways it was an idea whose time had come. Following in the footsteps of the great strides toward freedom made by the generations previous and framed by the contributions of a multiplicity of innovative thinkers, the earliest days of the American Experiment were unbelievably hard and unbelievably successful. Our nation became a shining light of Liberty to the world, a leader among the Nations. And it happened because, at every crucial moment in Our Story, good men and women stood arm in arm, and faced the challenges before them with that same determination that our Founding Fathers showed.
It is that same determination, that same sharpness of focus, which has secured the blessings of God on our congregation for over 150 years. For in the face of every adversity, of every challenge, men and women of God have risen up generation after generation and stood firm, together. This is why we are called the Community Church of Pine Run because, at our core, we are a community, a people in one accord.
Foundationally, the Christian Faith as the Word of God explains it, is a Covenant Relationship with the Sovereign Creator of all things and not in a religious system of rules and regulations. Thus it has always more of a Movement than an Institution, the Body of Christ animated by the Holy Spirit pursuing the glory of God. By design we are a diversity of members and yet one family, multiple generations and yet with one mission, to see God’s Kingdom come and His will be done here on earth as it is in heaven.
God has called us to live out our Faith in every moment of every day committed to vibrancy in our worship and fervency in our prayer, to evangelism that is natural and discipleship that considers the whole person, to authentic relationships and compassionate service to our neighbors. And when these things characterize our Life Together it is what makes each one’s story, Our Story, as we in one accord pledge our lives and fortunes and sacred honor to a Dream of a better tomorrow as well.
“You are the salt of the earth,
but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?
It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out
and trampled under people’s feet.
“You are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket,
but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others,
so that they may see your good works
and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
